Feeding Tips for Dogs

Outdoor Dogs

Hardworking dogs, dogs in winter and pregnant and nursing mothers need as much as three times the normal daily ration.

Dogs kept outdoors all of the time will have special dietary needs. Colder weather increases their need for calories.  The colder the weather, the more calories they need to keep warm.

Dogs' metabolic systems work through a series of chemical reactions, which all give off heat as a by-product.

By increasing protein and fat in their diet, your dogs will be able to maintain a normal body core temperature during cold weather.

Protein helps increase dogs' blood volume, helping them to stay warm.  Fat contains twice the calories of proteins or carbohydrates, so they won't run out of energy while outside.

Remember to provide adequate shelter, warm bedding and fresh water for your outdoor animals.
